Summer Promotional Apparel Trend: Swimwear

The start of summer means swimsuit season has arrived. Between weekend getaways to the shore, tropical vacations, and just lounging by the pool, the swimsuit is an essential item, and it's important to be on trend. There are hundreds of styles of swimsuits, from the classic bikini to the one-piece or tankini, not to mention board shorts, trunks and briefs for men. With all these styles to choose from, there's bound to be a style that's perfect for everyone.

To start, look to the runways for the best trends of the 2012 swimwear season. Black and white swimsuits don't have to be boring; Chanel's 2012 Resort runway show featured polka dots, stripes and color blocking in that standard pairing. Diesel featured sleek one-shoulder swim looks, and Norma Kamali brought back the vintage look with retro-inspired high-waist bottoms and wide halter tops. For men, shorter trunks are trendy as well as fun floral prints and bright colors. "Patterned swimwear is also big this spring, with styles ranging from simple two-color patterns to kaleidoscope-resembling pieces," says Norman Bishop, president of Bishop, The Garment Co. If these trends are too wild for your company, you can never go wrong with a classic shape or a solid color, which lends itself perfectly for customizing with a logo or design.

"Use a solid white body that allows you to print your choice of design with a brilliant outcome," says Elyse Bonner, showroom manager for American Apparel, "and black ribbed binding around the outline of the garments that helps to provide a clean, finished look. Companies can now sublimate any design they choose, in any quantity."

In the promotional products world, swimwear continues to be a hot item. "Surf brands, women's boutiques and beverage companies, as well as night clubs, have taken a huge interest in our swimwear," Bonner says. Bishop finds his swimwear is also popular with the military, sporting teams and resort uniforms. Though swimwear is most common during the spring and summer months, it still has appeal year-round (it's swimsuit season somewhere in the world at all times). This classic and essential item will continue to be a great seller for years to come.
